Scheduled Workshops for Faculty

To help prepare our faculty for the challenges of meeting the needs of today's students, we want to ensure that they feel comfortable with various teaching methodologies and educational technologies.

Below is a list of upcoming workshops with registration information. Many times, only a few people can attend; if we have a better idea of how many people are coming, we can better plan the workshops.

Unfolding the Unfolding Case

  • Describe how to position the core case sessions across the week and over the course of the block
  • Describe the key elements and themes/subthemes for University of Illinois case-based instruction
  • Describe two approaches to develop case-based educational activities for active learning
  • Explain the roles of different faculty in the development of a case-based educational activity
  • Outline the connection between the case and associated themes/sub-themes
  • Begin to develop case-based materials for active learning session(s) collaboratively with block team and select subtheme leaders
  • Determine methods to link learning objectives to core case activities

Poll Everywhere
Poll Everywhere is an audience response system that uses mobile devices, Twitter, and the Web. Responses are displayed in real-time to promote discussion. Here is an interesting video where a medical faculty member demonstrates how to use polling: https://www.polleverywhere.com/videos/in-the-wild/polling-in-medical-case-study. A nice 'value added' here is how he uses PowerPoint to create a 'choose your own diagnosis' presentation. This technique has been used in some of courses, and students seem to enjoy it.

Osmosis

 

Osmosis is a web- and mobile-application that makes medical education more efficient by (a) consolidating the best available educational content like videos, practice questions, and articles into a single learning environment; (b) providing tools for students to write, share, and curate their own practice questions and content; and by (c) using advanced learning science to deliver this content so that students can absorb, retain, and employ it as easily as possible.

By integrating different kinds of content, like videos, USMLE-style practice questions, memory anchors and reference articles, Osmosis makes content stickier and helps students prepare simultaneously for Class Exams, Board Exams, and Clinical Practice. It also helps them crowdsource their own content and materials, for more engaged, active, and collaborative learning.

Osmosis delivers high-quality content from medical experts as well as through partnerships with world-class leaders in medical education. Osmosis delivers relevant content alongside course documents; generates customizable quizzes; and suggests daily flashcards and questions based on a student’s curriculum, schedule, and quiz-performance history. 

So…why should you care? You can use Osmosis to see what students are studying and how they are using your lecture content. There are also a lot of resources in Osmosis that you can use for your own in-class sessions.

Explain Everything

 

Explain Everything is a mobile app that can be used to create short tutorials / information videos to be used as prep material. You can even use it to record a short video as a response to student questions in class. This app is being used extensively by Dr. Elliot Kaufman, our Chicago M1 Medical Genetics course director.

The mobile app for iOS and Android is available for purchase prior to the workshop from the Apple App Store (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/explain-everything-classic/id431493086?mt=8)  or the Google Play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.explaineverything.explaineverything&hl=en). For some reason, it costs more for Android users. Make sure you come with the app installed on your device (and bring your device!) I also recommend putting a PowerPoint presentation that you typically use in Box; we will show you how to connect Explain Everything to your Box account to retrieve it.

Adobe Captivate 9
Adobe Captivate 9 is a powerful program that allows you to go seamlessly from storyboarding to responsive eLearning design. It can be used to create interactive preparatory material for courses, tutorials for departments, etc. 

Create amazing screencasts or tutorials that run seamlessly across desktops and mobile devices. There is a new tool called Adobe Captivate Draft which is only available on iOS devices currently. I will show how to use both of these products. 

You can obtain Captivate for your UIC workstation by going through the UI webstore: http://webstore.illinois.edu. Click on Unit Purchases and look for Adobe products. Someone in your department will need a C-FOAPAL account to purchase it, but it is free for staff.
